I never thought a car could be that awesome and that terrible at the same time....

Until I drove an Alfa 147 GTA...

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Fast, loud enough, very responsive steering (a bit too much power steering to my taste, which makes the massive torque steer borderline tricky but hey, that will do...), somewhat confortable in spite of the stiff chassis and suspensions...

But panel gaps... Oh my god! And I know the car never got into a crash. The build quality in general is just freaking awful.

Within 15km, I ended up with a cracked exhaust...

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

.... the radio tried to escape all by itself after a 1st gear pull on a slightly bumpy road...

Kinja'd!!!

... and the gear shifter decided it wanted to go elsewhere.

Kinja'd!!!

I drive a 31 year old car every day and I was shocked at the quality of this thing. It’s... BAD. Like really bad!!

But then again, when it doesn’t fall appart into pieces... You’ve got this:

Kinja'd!!!

And that would almost make the whole thing worth it! But really, come on Alfa... Get your shit together. Figuratively and litteraly. And I was lucky that this is a very well maintained example!

Makes you wonder how a badly maintained one would fare....

The sound of those Busso V6 engines is great though, I regularly see a 156 GTA, and the sound it produces stuns me every time.

I’d still want one, if it weren’t for our displacement-based taxes. That glorious sound really makes up for most of its problems.

The sound really is amazing; got surprised by a 166 starting up some time ago. Ultimate Q-car when it isn’t broken down by the side of the road.

The father of an old classmate has a 166 with the Busso. He has had it for 10-ish years, but doesn’t know what to replace it with, so just ends up keeping it every time.

Awesome! The Lancia Thema 8.32 sounds like a perfect replacement?

Sounds like a reasonable choice, totally not a less reliable choice, haha.

It’s probably better because Ferrari... I loved my short experience with the Thema.

How much would the tax be in Belgium? The 147 GTA would cost about 240€-260€ a year in Germany.

One-time registration fee of ~€1600, yearly tax of ~€1400. I pay about €350/year for my MR2, for comparison.

Wow, that’s hella lot for a damn compact car. Even the 350,- for the MR2 is pretty high. It would cost you 121,- in taxes a year in Germany. Fu...

Yeah, and it’s better than it used to be, as they include a CO2 correction factor these days. Anything over 4l used to be €5k/year IIRC.
